Final-Farewell

Since the beginning of the semester. I was nervous entering the semester afraid what was going to be ahead of me while taking this class.  During the sixteen weeks of the semester I sure did learn a lot. The activities during this semester were as follows: a summary of a documentary, weekly blog posts, exercises from our textbook Just the Facts by Michael Biggs, analysis of police scenes, and concluded with mock interviews. These activities did represent a lot about the law enforcement field while writing and interviews.

The text book readings made me analyze more about the law enforcement field. Some of the texting reading started to get boring yet every week but during our group interactions about the exercises we read brought a lot of different thoughts about certain topics discussed in the chapters.

Documentary project, this project at first was very difficult during our class time working together I started to figure out how to write in the past tense, as if I just lived the scene. I would recommend this project again for future classes but instead of a documentary video maybe the Police videos of real life events that happened were you discuss in class the event then make the students type out a report of the scenario. One thing that could be used is going online and getting templates of all the paperwork needed for reports and have the students write out all the information.

Mock interviews, this assignment was a very creative project. I found this project one of the funniest yet one of the best learning experiences in the class while interviewing people. I will not forget John and I interviewing about the stolen yogurt case, the questions asked made a setting making me feel like a real detective with John, only thing for future mock interviews is maybe real life cases that the students have to read about and perform questions for the interview. One of the greatest projects in the class that we had.

Blogs, at first I was a little scared of the blog entries being, that I never used a blog before and that I am not computer savvy as other students. I found this to be interesting reading other students comments about certain reflections we had to write about. Blogs made our thought come across that we may have not spoken in class about. favorite reflection was on the live events officers faced during their duties. From the citizens view what they may have thought compared to the law enforcement side believing the event was totally justifiable.

This semester had its downs at first but, the class came together to finish the semester strong. I had a great semester with the sixteen weeks. I wish every student an amazing rest of the semester and hope the best in the law enforcement community!

Final Reflection Rough Draft

This class has brought many opportunities on learning how to become a police officer. This class has better myself in certain writing areas that I struggle in while doing reports, while being in this class we have accomplished many different bases of writing such as the documentary project being one of the biggest key writing styles that law enforcement Officers face on a daily routine. Weekly blogs and reflections on scenario based things throughout the semester from videos to comments on specific things discussed while in class. The topics we discussed and the assignment we did through out the year all had some advantages and disadvantages throughout the semester. During the semester we had some rough patches on what should be discussed in our writing class and what shouldn't but, we all came to work together and as we finish the last week of class looking from the beginning of the semester to now we have learned a lot throughout this semester.

Video Reflections

The video I watched was where the cops shot the young teenager because of a toy assault rifle. Most people who watch the video will be shocked the officer shot a young teenager. People don't understand the situation unless they are actually there at that exact moment. The toy gun looked real and the officers told the boy to put the gun down which the boy would not cooperate with the officers by not listening to their commands. Its a very difficult situation to be in but remember if that gun were real they could have been killed in a matter of a second. Its the officers responsibility to make that split second decision which is always not the easiest.

Thoughts On Our Mock Interviews

During our mock interviews on Friday, we learned a lot in regards to how interviews are conducted and what strategies that can be used.

During my interview with my partner John I believe we did really well. Both of our strategies during the interview showed the possible offender to open up with hints that showed she was the offender. During our interview the tactics we used seemed to be intimidating.

Kayley was another person who was interviewing a possible a offender. During her interview she did a great job by preparing the questions she will conducted during the interview.  During her interview she did a very good job on building a rapport about the possible offender. The questions she asked were factual questions and she seemed to be aggressive when using these questions.

Furthermore, I think everyone did a great job during the mock interview. This project was a fun activity but yet it helps prepare us for bigger interviews that we may face in our futures.

Chapter 6

The thing I loved about chapter 6 is I felt that the arrest report writing. Will benefit us for our future in law enforcement. I liked how the book made us actually write out things about cases that took place.

Reality Of Your Appearance

After reading A Black Man Wore Different Kinds Of Clothing To See If People Treated Him Differently. The article shows how people judge just by your appearance. If someone was wearing a expensive suit compared to just sweats the would be treated better compared to someone wearing sweats. Most people judge even by age if you are young you may not have as much money compared to someone who is older. The article shows how each different clothing that he wore he was treated differently. Everyone should be treated similar regardless what they are wearing.

Facial Gestures

Episode 2 of Making A Murderer shows a lot of facial gestures through out the episode. During the interview with the state attorney and other key characters that were working on Avery's case all showed similar aspects of nervousness. During the interview with the Deputy Chief he keeps stating he does not "recall" anything about the incident. When we all know he truly does since this cased had to be one of the biggest cases that happen in his county.

How To Improve My Writting

Since we are halfway through the semester my writing has improved since we started. Few things that I should work on are some major things when it comes to writing.  First I feel my sentence structures need to be worked on. I seem to place words and information that may not even be relevant to what I am writing about. My punctuation seems to be another big thing, I seem to have run-on sentences when I am writing making the reader run out of breath. The only way I can fix theses issues is if I actually make time to go to the writing center. I seem to never make time, when I am off from school and work I do other things rather then actually going to school and taking the time to see a tutor. I understand that its just hurting myself even more by not seeking help. I do plan on getting help soon. So I can finish the rest of my semester not worrying what my grade will be with all of the final papers coming up.

The Best Notebook

Number 1.  This Notebook would be my number one choice for note taking while out on the field. The reason why I would use this notebook because its not to big to carry in my vest. fits right in my pocket being used for little notes with not serious situations.

Number 2. This Notebook is a little bit bigger but keeps the officer organized with subjects names and phone numbers being nicely organized for officers. That are on a bigger call needing a lot of witnesses information or victims information. This Book is not full size and easy to carry in your bag with all of your goodies in the police car.

Number 3. This Notebook would barley be used but you never know how much information you will need in your report. This full size notebook would be used to draw scenes to help picture what happen but also to maybe hand wright your report before you type it.

Exercise Number 13

On July 7th 2015, at approximately 1230 hours, I (Officer Ispas) was dispatched to 1647 Rancho, El Fuego reference a suspicious person.

I arrived on scene and spoke with caller katherine Tunney D.O.B of 09-16-1989 and her mother Carol, Tunney D.O.B of 1-21-1966. Katherine stated she was getting ready to leave her residence when she seen a white Toyota van wagon with a bearing registration of (836L92F) in the middle of the street. Katherine said she seen a male white with gray hair in the vehicle taking pictures of her residence. Katherine then went over to talk to the suspicious person, when the driver fled off at a high speed. A L.E.A.D.S Inquiry of the bearing registration of (836L92F) came back to a 2004 Toyota wagon that is registered to a Stephen, Bond D address of 3381 El Balazo, El Fuego.

Katherine told me that she only called the police because her mother Carol had the same issue on April of 2015. Carol told me that she filed a police report right after the incident happen. Carol explained that she was in her garage, when a unknown subject came by the garage and asked her what was her name. Carol refused to give any information making the subject leave in a 2008 SAAB bearing registration of (ISPYONU). A L.E.A.D.S inquiry of the registration came back to a Richard, Toomey address of 36 Paseo De Bonito, El Rancho.

I advised Katherine and Carol that no crime has occurred at this time and that this incident will be documented and forward to Investigations.

Nothing Further.

Finally Done!

The summary documentary project is complete. We are finally done with our first project. One of the biggest challenge I had was not to be bias and how to structure my paper. From the beginning to the end, my paper changed completely. I am proud to be finally done and hope the best with my future papers.

Thoughts My Own Writing

Last class discussion we wrote anything that came into our heads about our writing on the documentary project. Writing about our own free thoughts this is what I was thinking in my head while writing.

One main thing is my confidence when it comes down to writing. I seem to let myself down, thinking I'm the worst when it comes down to writing papers with my grammar and spelling. Then, it affects myself to be lazy and "Fluff" the paper as people would say. Including things in my writing that don't even make sense. Another, Issue in my writing is I seem not to focus I keep talking about something that doesn't even correlate or wasn't in video. My writing doesn't seem to be a timeline every main plot is all over the place.

That being said One of my Pros when writing is, I'm good at always keeping things short and sweet. This can be good or a bad when it comes to writing papers.

Its very good this week in class that we get time to manage our papers and write multiple drafts. It benefits with time when everyone has other things going on and whats needed to be fixed in our papers.

Documentary Blackfish

The documentary I decided to watch was Blackfish out of the list of decisions.  The film gave me many emotions throughout the documentary. I think this video will be a good one for our documentary project.

The Idea Of Being Mind Controlled

When people see and hear they react in different ways. In the video Making a Murderer the film showed a lot intense picture and sound that made the viewers truly believe who the real victim was in the documentary. The video played a huge impact on me making feel that Steven Avery, was the only victim and not looking at the other victims trying to understand the real story behind Steven Avery being accused. The video seems to make a one person point of view, with pictures of before he was in prison then later, to this video footage of an older man being locked up for years and aging within time. So, we get this picture in our head that he has aged and his life will never be the same. Music, was another huge part of the video everything seemed to be slow that makes you feel sad yet wondering how can this happen to someone. The video accomplishes a lot by making us as the viewers focus in on one thing and that being Steven Avery was prisoned for something he didn't do. Also, The people who accused him and sentenced him for all those years were let off without any punishment.

Making A Murder.....

Watching the first episode of "Making a Murder" made me have very mixed emotions. The part that surprised me the most was how the Manitowoc's County law enforcement was able to charge Steven with rape and trying to kill a woman named Penny Beerntsen after, she identified him as the attacker. One comment she said her attacker had brown eyes when clearly Steven had blue eyes. There was no real evidence proving Steven as the offender, Prosecutors and Sherif officers working the case still went on with what they started off with, knowing now that there is no turning back and they will make sure Steven is found guilty. The huge issue was the state was wrong for finding Steven as a suspect and convicting him for something he did not commit. Steven being in prison for over 18 years then being found not guilty causes a huge problem with the state and other police officers across the nation, making everyone think that any officials can get away from doing a huge mistake like this for a long time, and causing a problem with Stevens future for the rest of his life. Yet we have to look at, the Police are supposed to make sure we don't convict someone for something they didn't do and clearly from the beginning they should have looked into other suspects. Even, after the victim gave a different description about her offender, that doesn't even match Steven. Cases and documentation like this create Case Laws and benefits people so they can try and appeal cases for something that they have not committed. My favorite part of the video is how much clear evidence was given to prove Steven was not guilty. DNA showing that Gregory Allen was the one who committed the act proves that everybody accusing Steven was wrong, making it one of the best parts in the video.
